AOBRD use after ELD mandate

ELD Mandate & ABORD Use

In a few days, driving a commercial vehicle without an electronic logging device will leave a vehicle out of commission and the driver unable to drive legally. After April 1, the final phase of the ELD mandate goes into effect, and all drivers are required to use e-logs or compliant AOBRD software to track hours of service (HOS).

Prior to the ELD mandate, paper logs and automatic on-board recording devices (AOBRD) were the two primary ways of tracking hours of service (HOS). Since the ELD mandate, paper logs have become obsolete in terms of keeping track of HOS, but drivers using AOBRDs have been left in a grey area. There has been much speculation as to whether the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will accept AOBRDs as acceptable means of recording HOS and for how long. Luckily, the FMCSA recently released a definite clarification on AOBRDs after the April 1 deadline for the ELD mandate.

AOBRDs After April 1

According to the FMCSA, motor carriers that installed an AOBRD before December 18, 2017 may install and use a new ELD-capable device that runs compliant AOBRD software. This exemption runs until December 16, 2019. After Dec. 2019, AOBRDs will be considered obsolete and all drivers will be required to use an approved ELD in compliance with the FMCSA ELD mandate.
