Why You Should Switch to E-Logs Now

With the ELD mandate deadline approaching fast, it’s time to make the transition to using electronic logging devices to record your hours of service (HOS) and to track, manage, and share records of duty status (RODS) data. Switching to a new ELD system can be intimidating, though, so we’ve compiled a list of benefits to using electronic logs, when compared to paper logs, to make your transition to using ELDs that much easier.

Transition to ELDs Today

By December 18, 2017, all commercial trucks subject to the ELD rule must operate with electronic logging devices (or existing AOBRDs, which will fail to be compliant by December 16, 2019, or earlier if they become inoperable before that date). If you haven’t made the switch to ELDs already, we understand that the quickly approaching ELD deadline could feel overwhelming — but here’s what you can do:

  • Head over to Konexial.com and buy My20 ELD (great for owner-operators) and My20 Tower (an ELD that’s perfect for fleets). Both are in-stock ELDs that are ready to ship and help you meet ELD compliance. Best yet, our ELD is affordable, easy-to-use, and offers driver rewards (GoFuel) and extra income opportunities with GoLoad.
  • In your transition from paper logs to e-logs, make sure you properly train your team and your drivers how to use ELDs, how to report driver harassment, and what ELD supporting documents need to stay in the vehicle at all times. Training and ELD knowledge will make your switch to ELDs that much smoother. If you need some help, check out our ELD Transition Guide.
  • As with any new rules or regulations, kinks and problems are expected. Get through issues, questions, and ELD malfunctions — smoothly — by implementing an in-house communication plan that drivers can count on. In addition, make sure everyone understands ELD downtime procedures.
  • Cut down on your personal downtime, confusion, and frustration by switching to e-logs sooner than later. By December 16, 2019, all drivers subject to the ELD rule will have to be using ELDs — nothing else, including AOBRDs installed before December 18, 2017, will be permitted. Avoid the hassle — switch to ELDs today.

Why You Should Switch to ELDs

ELDs Result in Fewer Violations

Electronic logging devices help drivers cut back on violations with the department of transportation (DOT). Hours-of-service violations are not only the most common violations drivers face, but they are also the most preventable. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), drivers are only allowed to drive for a certain amount of hours at a time, depending on their rest schedule. An electronic logging device’s highly precise tracking capabilities, when compared to paper logs, helps drivers by taking all the guesswork out of HOS recording and RODS data. With electronic logs, drivers no longer have to second guess their hours, and there’s never a question of when they’ve reached their maximum drive time.

ELDs Offer Greater Convenience

How often do things get lost in the shuffle? It’s incredibly common for papers to get confused in piles, misplaced, accidentally thrown away, or just completely lost. Luckily, e-logs solve that problem completely. Logging your hours-of-service electronically with e-logs eliminates the possibility of losing paper logs, inaccurate logging, and more. And while limited ELD editing will still exist, one of the major benefits of ELDs is that they do the work of accurately recording hours-of-service for you. Plus, you’ll have access to your securely stored HOS records anywhere you go.

ELDs Protect Against Driver Harassment

ELDs protect drivers from driver harassment as soon as they’re in use. How? With a precise HOS tracking system, drivers can’t adjust the ELD’s HOS logs, and carriers can’t harass drivers to drive beyond their HOS or “when their ability or alertness is impaired due to fatigue, illness or other causes that compromise safety.” The ELD mandate and ELDs effectively offer precise record-keeping capabilities that protect drivers from carrier harassment, but they also alleviate pressure from management or employers.
